The Chanlan Lee Scholarship was instituted in memory of Chanlan Lee. Chanlan was the youngest recipient of an NBS scholarship and a rising star in the young musician arena. He tragically passed away at the age of 8 due to viral encephalitis. We honor Chanlan, his family, and his lasting impression on the community with this scholarship.

On May 8, the 8-year-old third grader from Haverford will put on a tiny tuxedo and take the stage at the Annenberg Center for the finals of a hard-fought national “Classical Music Idol” competition in which the newcomer has outplayed performers twice his age who’ve been studying longer than he’s been alive.” More…

Main Line Times

“The NBS Classical Music Institute, a nonprofit sector of the Nelly Berman School of Music that provides scholarships to young musicians, held auditions for Young Classical Music Idol on March 21. Over 180 students descended upon the school to audition for this one-of-a-kind competition. In its first year, Young Classical Music Idol has reached young musicians not only in the Philadelphia area, but in Virginia, Michigan and Nevada! Students are vying for the top prizes of $2,200 to participate in Golden Key Vienna and a $5,000 Cunningham piano. Only one student will be crowned the first-ever Young Classical Music Idol.” More…

On my way to work, I always listen to the radio. Yesterday, I was listening to a story about a group of neighbors in Canada that put together a program for children between the ages of 4-6, entitled “Backyard Olympics”. This got me thinking. When did the need and desire for professional athletes outweigh the same for professional musicians? Both music and sports are beneficial to our children. One stimulates the body, the other stimulates the mind.

The Young Classical Music Idol Competition and Festival can be compared to “Backyard Olympics”. We are providing an environment to young musicians that prepare them for competition both in the music world, but in everyday life. “Backyard Olympics” looks to train young children with the tenacity and vigor that they would find in serious competitions. Here, we seek to do the same, but afford students, who might be a little more timid, the ability to perform on stage. So, in a way, we offer the Olympics and Intramurals.

Young Classical Music Idol Competition and Festival is quickly gaining recognition throughout the region. We have students from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and even Maryland. I’ve talked with David Kim, concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra, about this event and he is genuinely thrilled that we are offering this type of competition.

Canada might have the “Backyard Olympics”, but we have the only Young Classical Music Idol and Competition.
